When the skin beneath the eyelids appears darkened, this condition is called dark circles under the eyes.

They are purple or blue to dark brown or black, depending on skin color. It is a very common problem in men and women. They make you appear older than you are.

It is a common problem in people with a genetic predisposition to this condition. It is a very difficult task to get rid of it. Tiredness and lack of sleep also make your skin darken under the eyes. Many other factors cause this problem.

Your skin loses the fat and collagen needed to maintain your skin’s elasticity. On the other hand, the dark vessels beneath the eyes become more visible and cause the darkening of the area beneath the eyes.

Eyestrain:

Watching TV and spending more time in front of a computer screen causes a significant strain on your eyes.

The strain on your eyes accumulates the dark blood vessels under your eyes and makes them enlarge. As a result, your skin becomes dark underneath your eyes.

Allergies:

Allergic reactions and eye dryness also make your skin dark circles under the eyes. Your body releases histamine as a response when you have an allergic reaction.

It causes itchiness, redness, puffy eyes. It also causes your blood vessels to dilate and become more visible under your eyes.

Overexposure to the sun is also a common cause of dark circles under the eyes. When your body exposes to the sun, it produces excessive melanin pigment that darkens your skin color. It particularly affects your eyes and causes pigmentation in the surrounding area of the eye.

Genetics is a major cause of this problem. Family history develops dark circles under your eyes. Some predispositions and certain medical conditions are the common cause of this problem.

Treatment depends upon the underlying cause of dark circles. Some simple home remedies help to get rid of this problem. Some medical treatments are also available that reduce the appearance of dark circles.

Treatment of Dark Circles with Home Remedies:

Simple home remedies for the treatment of dark circles are the following:

  • Apply a cold compress
  • Get extra sleep
  • Soak with tea bags

Apply a Cold Compress:

It helps reduce swelling and shrink dilated blood vessels beneath the eyes. It also helps to reduce the puffy appearance of the eyes.

Wrap some ice cubes in a piece of cloth and apply it to the skin under your eyes for 20 minutes. Repeat this process for better results.

Get Extra Sleep:

Allow yourself to get seven to eight hours of sleep daily. Lack of sleep makes your skin pale and dull and you look older than your age. It also causes dark circles. Get extra sleep to reduce the appearance of dark circles.

Soak with Tea Bags:

Tea contains caffeine and antioxidants. These antioxidants help to stimulate blood circulation and shrink your blood vessels near the eye area.

It also reduces liquid retention beneath your skin. Soak your tea bags in water and then refrigerate for 15 to 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, apply these bags to your eyes.

Medical Treatments of Dark Circles:

Common medical methods for the treatment. These methods are the following:

  • Laser surgery
  • Medical tattoos
  • Tissue fillers
  • Fat removal

Chemical Peels:

These are used to reduce pigmentation of the skin.
