High blood pressure or hypertension is when your blood travels through blood vessels faster than the normal speed. High blood pressure damage the blood artery and blood vessels that leads to dangerous complication.
These complications may lead to the death of the patients if they are left untreated. Blood pressure is the measurement of the systolic pressure over diastolic pressure.
Systolic pressure is when the heart beats and diastolic pressure is when the heart rests between beats. The normal reading of blood pressure is 120/80mmHg.

Effects of Hypertension on the Body:
Sometimes high blood pressure doesn’t show any symptoms. This condition is dangerous because the patient doesn’t know about the disease.
When hypertension remains untreated, then it damages your whole body and causes serious complications. Hypertension affects your body functions. These systems are the following:
- Nervous system
- Circulatory system
- Respiratory system
- Skeletal system
- Urinary system
- Reproductive system
Effect on Nervous System:
Hypertension or high blood pressure causes dementia. Blockage in blood vessels causes the reduced blood flow in the arteries.
Reduced blood flow causes memory and thinking problems. Patients have trouble remembering and understanding things. They have lost focus during conversations and performing different activities.
The blockage of arteries causes damage in arteries in the brain. When a larger blockage occurs in the brain, it leads to a stroke. The brain cell begins to die when the brain cells can’t get oxygen from the blood.
If the stroke is severe, then it can cause permanent brain damage. This condition also damaged the blood vessels in the eyes.
If these blood vessels burst or bleed, then it causes vision problems like blurriness and blindness. Sometimes it causes choroidopathy that is a condition in which the fluid buildup under the retina.
Effect on Circulatory System:
High blood pressure affects the whole human body. The damage caused by hypertension starts with small and then increases with time. If left untreated, it causes serious health issues and risks.
The body’s circulatory system consists of a major organ, the heart, and blood vessels. These blood vessels carry blood throughout the body and supply it to all the body organs and tissues. When the pressure of the blood increases, it begins to damage artery walls.
The damage in the arteries starts from the tears, and when tear forms in the artery walls, the bad cholesterol flow through the blood attached to the arteries’ tears.
Accumulation of cholesterol in the walls of arteries makes the arteries narrow, and less blood is getting through the arteries.
Lack of blood supply causes damage to the body tissues and organs. It can cause chest pain, irregular heartbeat and increase the risk of a heart attack.
The heart also has to work harder due to a lack of blood supply. The left ventricle is a part of the heart which is part of the heart that pumps blood to the body. The heart pumps the blood with an extra force that leads to an enlarged left ventricle. It increases the risk of heart failure.
Heart failure is a condition in which your heart becomes so weak and damaged from high blood pressure. Working hard and a previous heart attack stops pumping blood through your body.
Signs of heart failure include:
- Trouble breathing
- Shortness of breath
- Feeling tired
- Swelling in the feet, ankles, joints, legs, or abdomen
High blood pressure causes a bulge to form in a damaged artery known as an aneurysm.
Effect on Respiratory System:
Like the brain and heart, arteries in the lungs are also damaged due to hypertension. The arteries are damaged and blocked.
This blockage in the artery that carries blood to your lungs causes pulmonary embolism. It occurs when a blood clot is reached in the lungs with the blood. This condition is severe and causes immediate treatment.
Hypertension causes a sleep apnea disorder in the patients. Sleep apnea is a disorder that causes loud snoring and breathing interruption during night sleep. The people feel restless in the morning. It is caused due to hypertension.
Effect on Skeletal System:
High blood pressure causes bone loss by increasing the amount of calcium your body gets rid of when you urinate. It is known as osteoporosis. Women who have gone through menopause are at high risk.
Effect on Urinary System:
The urinary system is a system by which all waste is excreted out from the body. In this system, kidneys play an essential role.
Kidneys help to remove waste from the blood. This removal of wastes helps to maintain the blood volume and pressure in the body. The waste removes from the body in the form of urine.
Hypertension damage your large blood pressure leading to your kidney and smaller vessels inside the kidney. This damage of blood vessels affects the performance of kidneys and urine formation.
This condition leads to kidney diseases, and sometimes it causes kidney failure. So hypertension is one of the major reasons for kidney damage. People with kidney failure are not able to remove waste from their bodies.
This condition may lead to oedema. People need dialysis for the removal of waste from the body. Complete damage of kidney treated by kidney transplant.
Effect on Reproductive System:
Sexual organs need extra blood flow during arousal. Hypertension causes blockage in blood vessels that leads to the primary reproductive organs, penis, and vagina.
The blockage in blood vessels causes sexual dysfunction. In men, they have a hard time maintaining an erection. The complications in women are the following:
- Decreased arousal
- Vaginal dryness
- Trouble having an orgasm
These are the effects of hypertension on the body. It is important to adopt healthy habits like eating healthy foods and doing daily exercise, eating a diet that is lows in sugars and salts, etc. Check your blood pressure regularly and visit your doctor.
